Our Project

With Bangalore City's developed area having almost doubled since 1973, there is a growing concern that the once abundant Slender Loris population is now restricted to forest patches within educational institute campuses and large parks. Our goal is to document the current status of slender loris in the urabn areas of Bangalore. The project will be set out in two distinct phases:

Phase I

  • Document current and past distribution of the loris and its habitats in Bangalore: surveys and interviews with people, and nocturnal surveys of the loris in remaining habitats

  • Investigate pressures on urban loris population through habitat loss, hunting, illegal pet trade.

  • Establish a monitoring protocol and program in Bangalore that is run and maintained by trained citizen scientists.

  • Create a database for long-term monitoring.

Phase II

  • Partner with NGOs & govt to develop plans for urban wildlife management

  • Production of a toolkit for monitoring lorises and other small mammals in urban areas.

  • Start similar projects in cities such as Chennai, Mysore that have reported loris populations.

  • Develop an education program for advocacy and outreach on urban wildlife conservation.

  • Study population ecology and behavior of lorises in urban habitats
